Original Medicare

Original Medicare is Medicare Part A which covers hospitalization, and Part B, which covers doctors visits, lab tests, screenings, etc.

Medicare has no maximum out of pocket expenses, requires co-payments, and does not include prescription drug coverage unless you add Part D, which is optional prescription coverage.  Medicare Part B also has a deductible that must be met before coverage begins.

Medigap / Medicare Supplemental

Medigap, or Medicare Supplement is an additional policy that covers expenses not already covered by your Original Medicare coverage, like deductibles and other out of pocket expenses.

When you first become eligible, Medigap has guaranteed enrollment, but after of the original enrollment period, you may be denied coverage or charged a higher premium unless you have another special Open Enrollment situation.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) is a private alternative to Medicare. Many may be a no cost or low premium cost to you.  These plans require you to use their network of physicians.  Most plans include prescription medicines and have a maximum out of pocket cost, which could be beneficial depending on your situation.
